2012 ~ No Willpower Here

I've always been pretty much an immediate gratification type person whether it be shopping for clothes, books, or even eating something delicious and not worrying about the calories (until later). Well the same seems true when it comes to reading challenges. For 2012, I was pretty sure I'd be going "challenge-free", but then I started thinking how much I really enjoyed the (6) I participated in in 2011, and I completed 5/6 so far and am close to completing # 6 as well.  So why not join - it feels right.

2011 Challenges -
  • 100+ Book Challenge (110/100 -  right now)
  • Reading from My Shelves ( 50/50
  • eBook Challenge (17/20)
  • Europa Challenge (5/4)
  • Audio Book Challenge (33/20)
  • RIP VI (5/4)
So why not join a few in 2012? Just a few, no pressure, ones that seem doable -- reading the kinds of books I want to read anyways in the process.

  2012 Challenge Plans:

  • 100+ Book Challenge
  • eBook Challenge (goal of 25)
  • Audio Book Challenge (goal of 25)
  • Back to Classics Challenge (Steinbeck and Dickens plans)

I'm very strict with my diet, wanting to lose about 20 more pounds, but I'm the same way with books. I received seven in the mail that I ordered off of abebooks.com. I expect there'll be eight in the mailbox tomorrow, and it never completely thins out because there's always a book I spot online that I just have to read right away.

  2. I think it's a great idea to join a challenge. That keeps you on track. I take some challenges, like trying to write 50,000 words in November, and trying to train for the marathon every summer, but I rarely complete them. The fact that I have met those challenges in the past means I'll probably keep trying every year. I look forward to your book news as you read oodles of books.

  3. I love it! I haven't announced what challenges I'm joining yet in 2012 but I am definitely going to join in some because I just think they are fun :)

  4. All of these look great, and I hope that you get a chance to do all of them, and succeed mightily! Good luck!

  5. Oh boy, I am trying to stay away for 2012. Like usual I got in over my head this year and couldn't even keep track of what I read for who! LOL

Good luck to you and great job in 2011

  6. I think I know what you mean about the whole immediate gratification thing. It might have something to do with why I seem to keep buying myself things while I'm out Christmas shopping and also why my TBR mountain is so high (let's not even talk about my waistline). ;-)

I'm going challenge-free again this year. After sucking at challenges for a couple too many years in a row, I decided that however exciting they might seem at first, I always end up disappointed in myself when I can't quite complete them. Hope you enjoy yours, though! =)

  7. I wasn't going to join any challenges either, but I've been adding quite a few of them. LOL I'm addicted :)

  9. Back to Classics sounds great! Can't wait to read about your experiences with these.

  10. I love joining challenges, because I wind up reading books I otherwise wouldn't have. Last year's strategy was to join a large number of challenges at a low level, which worked well -- I should finish them all by Dec. 31. Some of the challenges I'm interested in this year have higher totals, so I'll probably join fewer, though. I'm doing Back to the Classics and Europa next year, as well as What's in a Name 5! As always, looking forward to your reviews in 2012!

  11. I promised myself that I would not officially join too many challenges in 2012.

    oops.

    I think I'm at 20 now....although several require 1-5 books to complete level 1.

  15. Thanks for joining the Back to the Classics Challenge! I decided to keep this challenge going because it helps remind me to read those classics I've long said I'd get to "someday". I do tend to join too many challenges though, and I'm trying to keep myself in check this (coming) year!

  17. I was challenge-free this year and next year I'm only doing one (Venice in February). I don't like the pressure of challenges, I would hate failing at them!

  18. You're a challenge fiend! Enjoy and good luck.

  19. In 2010 I overdid it on challenges, so this year I only did one, which I will complete with the book I am currently reading.
I thought it was key that you said you entered challenges with books that you would read anyway -- I think I might have been more successful in 2010 had I done that.

Thanks for the list of challenges; I'm off to take a look.

  20. I have no willpower either … but at least you finish what you start (unlike me).

  21. I'm a mood reader and challenges always seem like work to me, so I have never participated and doubt that I will.

  22. Well done! You did so well on these challenges! I'm sure you'll manage again next year.

I keep telling myself not to join any more challenges, but they're all so much fun. The problem is, I might stick to them and not read anything else that I may like to read. Although I totally failed on one challenge this year.

  23. You do well with reading challenges, unlike me! And I need to "get going" on the challenge I'm hosting!!

  24. Thanks for the link - I haven't decided anything but I'm sure I will be doing more challenges in 2012!

  25. I love the photo of the kitty. I try not be instant gratification with my books as my shelves are overflowing.

  26. I agree with you. My first year blogging I eagerly signed up for many challenges that I wasn't able to complete.

I do love the sense of community that they build...

Good for you for owning your reading experience :)

  27. I seem to alternate years in my challenge participation. I didn't do any challenges this year save for R.I.P. However, I may join some next year. QGR will definitely be taking its turn in hosting a few, which I am looking forward to.
